“Too many people spend money they earned… to buy things they don’t want… to impress people that they don’t like.”
– Will Rogers
So true, right? We all know at least one person that spends a large majority of their money on things to impress family, so-called friends, neighbors, etc. Recently, I watched some recently have to have the largest house of his “friend circle,” the latest luxury car, the latest cell phone, watch, computer, etc. In fact, he was wasting so much time being the most impressive person of a group that he secretly hated, that he lost focus on his career and business, both of which took a major dive. Seriously. He went on a couple’s vacation to a place he had no interest in going to just out of spite for not being invited the first time they went on a group trip.
Here is my shared experience, stop impressing people with things. In fact, I say stop impressing people in general. Just live to your values, to your truth, to what makes you happy. Ironically, you just living a happy, positive and productive life is, I would say, more impressive than anything else. The better you get, the more people look up to you, inspired by you, mimic you. And isn’t that better? Rather than doing things to impress, live your life and gain respect by doing what you want to do. And those who don’t and become jealous, either they choose to leave, like I did in the example above, or you leave them.
Trust me, it feels 10x better to earn respect or inspire someone vs just trying to impress people, particular people who don’t matter.
Earn people’s respect, not make them jealous, and make a real impact.
