“Our bodies are our gardens – our wills
are our gardeners.”
– William Shakespeare
Food is fuel. However, some foods are better than other for fuel. And we do have the ability to make our own choices. Even if it is to choose to not put something into your body. But a healthy body is only as healthy as what you put into it.
And for me, my biggest problem was not planning meals and being at a point of starvation or “hangry” and I would just grab what I could. This could mean snacks, junk food, fast food, etc. And yes, there are “healthy” snacks, but I never planned. I assumed I would have time to make myself a lunch, or to stop at a healthy place to grab lunch, and it never happened that way.
Finally, I put time on my schedule to plan out meals, snacks, etc. And now I carry things like granola bars, protein packs, fruit, and the like with me at all times. That way if I’m busy, I have a healthier alternative. I am careful to keep it in my calorie count.
But, also, I committed to eating fresher foods (not processed), local food (farmer’s market and my own garden), and seasonal food. This also includes making my own granola, yogurt, kombucha, pasta, bread and so much more. It isn’t always convenient, and it isn’t perfect, I don’t always have time to bake enough bread for the week. But I try. And I get more fresh food than I did before, so it is a start.
Plus, I am committing more time in 2020 to making fresh foods and buying locally. What are you planning for 2020?
